Security camera (DVR) recording will not open
A DAV, H.264 or Hikvision recording from a DVR or NVR will not open? Ordinary video players often cannot open these recordings. The files may also have been damaged while copying or when the recorder was switched off.
Before you connect the disk to a computer
Windows, macOS and Linux often do not recognise the hard disk of a DVR, CCTV or NVR recorder. When the computer does not recognise the disk, Disk Management may offer to initialise or format it. Do not accept, and do not create a new partition on the disk. The recordings may be lost or become unreadable. When you put the disk back into the recorder later, the recorder may see it as empty.
If the disk was initialised or formatted, stop using it so that no new recording is written over it.
What we do
- We turn DAV, H.264, H.265, Hikvision and MPEG recordings into MP4 video that plays.
- If one file holds several cameras, the longest channel recording comes first.
- If the disk cannot be read on a computer, our lab can examine it separately.
Important
The recorder may write new recordings over old footage. If a recording matters, stop the recorder now. Do not initialise or format the disk.
