Sony camera recording will not open: XAVC S and RSV files

Short answer: when a Sony camera loses power or the card is pulled, the recording is left as an RSV file or as an MP4 that does not open. Upload this file; we repair it as an MP4 that plays.

Why?

  • The battery died while recording.
  • The card was taken out while recording.

Do this now

  • Take the card out.
  • If you use an SD card, set its write protection (WP) switch and keep it.
  • Copy the RSV or the MP4 that will not open to a computer and upload it to our site.
  • If you have a short clip that plays, made with the same camera and settings, keep it too.

Do not

  • Do not use "repair image database" on the camera; it can delete the RSV file.
  • If the camera offers a repair when the card goes back in, say no; the broken file can be deleted. Copy the card first.
  • Do not try other repair programs on the original file.

Questions

Why a sample video? Some Sony recordings need a working video of the same camera to be repaired. If needed, the page tells you.

Do the date and time come back? Mostly yes.

There is no XML file next to the video. That is fine; upload the video itself (MP4 or RSV).

The file shows 0 bytes. This file holds no picture. But the picture may still be on the card; bring the card to our lab.
